It turns out there's also a strong bias toward modern human sequences there, as well, and the authors interpret that as selective mating, with Neanderthal males showing a strong preference for modern human females and their descendants.

Like the N-closest algorithm, the weight of each candidate is given by the inverse of its distance to the input colour. Because of this, both algorithms produce output of a similar quality, although the N-convex method is measurably faster.
