She also noted that, though Friedmann was reading novels in jail, the book he was studying most closely was “Games People Play,” by Eric Berne, a Canadian clinician who developed a psychiatric theory he called “transactional analysis.” Berne argues that all social interactions are a type of psychological game—including crime. In fact, they may want to be caught, because “being found is the necessary payoff,” the due recognition of their daring. The book, a best-seller during the sixties, is an early and not overly convincing example of pop psychology. In his first letter to me, Friedmann urged me “not to hypothesize” about his personality. Still, his attachment to the book struck me as telling.
